Slow and Steady Idea Generation

A Month in the Life of A NaNoWriMo Participant

Does the term NaNoWriMo mean anything to you?  If you’re a writer—especially a young writer—who’s been online for the past 15 years, then it probably does.

NaNoWriMo…No?

In 2009, I set out to finally achieve my goal of writing a novel.  The premise behind National Novel Writing Month, founded in 1999 by Chris Baty, is to write 50,000 words by the end of the designated month, which is always November.  Although I won the competition (along with hundreds, if not thousands, of others), my novel was still incomplete, life happened, and I abandoned my novel as a result.  Five years later, I began the journey to resurrect and complete it.

Here’s my story.

The “DON’T Want” Priorities List: 15 Ideas for Setting Priorities

Lately, I’ve been getting all caught up in the “thick of thin things” when it comes to my priorities, and I was just sitting here in my local Chick-Fil-A for lunch thinking about what’s important to me and what my priorities should be.

The “DON’T Want” Priorities List

All of a sudden I wondered, “I know what’s important to me and what I want, but what about what I DON’T want?”

It’s easy to get so mixed up in life that you begin to grasp for the obvious solution; however, sometimes, like the negative spaces in a drawing, it’s in the not-so obvious that the real solution lies.

That being said, here’s my list of things that I DON’T want…

Career Advice from a Tentmaker (Acts 18:3)

I’ve just finished prayer and a Bible study in Galatians 3-4 which led me to an exciting—and quite revealing—discovery.  After praying for clarity and direction concerning mine and Melissa’s (my wife) careers and where God wants us to be financially, I opened my eyes and they rested upon Galatians 5:1, which speaks of remaining (aka “standing fast”) in the liberty in which Christ has made us free and not becoming entangled again with the “yoke of bondage.”

From this text I began to think about the aspects of true liberty and was further directed to 2 Corinthians 3:17, which states, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emphasis mine).”

Tending to the Forest of Entrepreneurship

It’s 11:50pm here as I sit at my desk with a turkey sandwich (mayo only), a slice of cheese (on the side), and a mug of milk (2%).  I just finished watching a couple of great interviews on the subject of being an author and an entrepreneur by Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant with Joanna Penn as the host.

After watching these interviews, I couldn’t help but think about what I would like to be doing in the coming months and well into next year.  This year has been a year mainly focused on and dedicated to my Bluegrass Guitar Essentials course (soon to be completed and released in a DVD version), with little room for much else besides running the many aspects of my business (website admin., YouTube videos, marketing, Social Media, bookkeeping etc.).

As a result, major burnout and overwhelm has occurred for me, and I plan on taking a totally different direction for myself in 2015.

Writing Can Be Great Therapy

Tools of the Trade

Writing can be great therapy, you know. All you really need is paper and pen. I prefer using a specific notebook that’s dedicated to writing your thoughts and ideas—yes, a journal, but a special one; not just any old notebook.

The pen should be special as well; something that will allow you to write fast and not stick to the page or drag along. You need to be able to write as fast as you can; as fas as you can think, preferably.  I recommend Uniball Signo 207 pens as well as Pilot Precise V5 pens.  If you’re looking for something a bit more stylish, you could try Space Pens.

“Why not just use my computer (tablet, etc.) to write,” you may ask. Well, you can, but there’s just something about using a pen to physically pull you in and get you involved in the whole process.
